Vandalism in Oak Hill and Southwest Austin

REWARD BEING OFFERED
As many of you unfortunately know, residents of Southwest Austin and Oak Hill have been the victims of vandalism recently. Over 80 vehicles throughout our area had windows shot out during the night Monday, December 19th/ 20th , with almost 300 in total since October.

OHAN members have decided to do something about this. OHAN is offering a reward, in conjunction with the Austin Police Department and Austin Crime Stoppers, for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for these crimes.

Our community needs you- please donate to the fund to help solve these needless crimes. With your support, we hope to at least double the $1,000 reward being offered through Crime Stoppers. Please pass this along to your members, family, and friends.

Donations should be sent to: OHAN- SW Austin Vehicle Vandalism Fund, P.O. Box 90906, Austin, Tx 78709-0906. This will not be a tax free donation.

If you have any information that might be helpful in the apprehension of these vandals, please call the Capital Area Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline - 512-472-TIPS (8477) OR 1-800-893-TIPS (8477) or the Austin Police Department at 974-4402.

APD NEWS!

Public Information Office: (512) 974-5017 715 E. 8th St. Austin, Texas 78701

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 20, 2005
Contact: Public Information Office, 974-5017

DETECTIVES REQUEST PUBLIC’S ASSISTANCE
The Austin Police Department Southwest Area Command is requesting the public’s
assistance to locate and identify suspects that are involved in numerous criminal
mischief incidents. Since October 1st, police have received almost 200 reports of
vehicle windows that are damaged. This morning, detectives received 30 reports
of windows damaged during the night.

Detectives believe that the suspects are driving slowly through neighborhoods and
shooting out vehicle windows with a BB gun. The incidents occur at night, with the
majority of the crimes being committed on weekends or school holidays.
Originally, the incidents were reported in the Oak Hill area. APD is now receiving
reports from the Oak Hill area to the Manchaca Road and Slaughter Lane area.
Some residents in the area have had to replace windows in their vehicles two or
three times. The majority of the windows replaced are the back windows in
vehicles and the cost to replace these windows can be up to $500.

Detectives are asking neighborhood residents to be observant of individuals and
vehicles in their neighborhoods. If residents notice individuals dri ving slowly
through the neighborhood and appear suspicious, please call 9-1-1 immediately.
Detectives ask that residents gather as much information as possible, without
subjecting themselves to danger. Information that would be helpful is the make
and model of the vehicle, color, license plate, description of the driver, and the
number of occupants.

Media Advisory: A detective will be available for interviews from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m.
today (12/20/05) at the Clinton Hunter South Substation at 404 Ralph Ablanedo Drive. Please
call APD PIO to schedule an interview time.
